Making a record always takes longer than one expects.
We began recording in late 2017 with engineer Adam Keil at Music Shed Studios in New Orleans. We had a plan, but band photos and new albums seem to be the catalyst for untimely lineup changes. We reformed as The Two’s and continued on with editing and adding final touches at home. Grammy winning engineer Sylvia Massey and local engineer Ben Lorio - aka “The Wizard” - were hired to mix the songs. Steve Turnidge iced the cake with his mastering magic.
Some of our favorite production highlights include the tremolo guitar in “The Letter.” Inspired by a Smith's song. “City of Gold,” called for a touch of glockenspiel, rhodes, and some synth pads (who knew?). Also, it was nice to get my hands back on my Gretsch. Adam hooked up some nice amps, and I had a blast coming up with a few parts on most of the tracks. We decided we needed some consistent low end throughout the record as well and went with a simple bass line that gave a little resonance to the kick drum.
By the end of it all, working with Adam, Sylvia, Ben, and Steve - and discovering the freedom of editing and adding production at home - this turned out to be a fun project. We’re proud of this work and can’t wait to start work on the next project.
